| DESIGNED FOR WATER CONSERVATION | ||
Water conservation is an integral part of our desert lifestyle, and since as much as 70% of household water use is in the landscape, home gardeners and landscape professionals have an important opportunity to help conserve our water resources for the future. By selecting low-water-use plants and using efficient irrigation techniques, we can enhance and enjoy our outdoor living spaces and reduce water consumption without sacrificing our quality of life.
In the Sonoran desert, water efficient, creative landscapes are often called xeriscapes. Xeriscape comes from the Greek word "xeros," which means dry, but xeriscapes don't need to be "zero-scapes," which implies barren landscaping with little or no plants. Instead, xeriscapes can reflect the natural beauty and diversity of the Sonoran Desert, or evoke a Mediterranean oasis. The possibilities are as endless as your creativity. Designing for water conservation starts with the seven principles of xeriscape, providing an outline for creating and maintaining an attractive, healthy, water-efficient landscape.
