Our daily lives depend on the availability and reliability of clean water. Ensuring access to safe, secure water requires a dedicated and diverse team of water professionals committed to protecting and managing Arizona’s water supplies—an essential responsibility for the state’s future.
Supplying water to more than half of Arizona’s population is no small feat. In the ten AMWUA cities, over 2,500 water professionals play vital roles—delivering water to your tap, managing essential wastewater services, and maintaining seamless operations. Their work includes operating and maintaining 30 water treatment plants, overseeing more than 1 million water meters, ensuring 142,000 fire hydrants are ready for emergencies, and constructing, maintaining, and upgrading over 18,000 miles of water lines as needed.
This highly trained workforce includes operators of water and wastewater treatment systems, along with technicians who maintain and repair thousands of miles of water lines each day. Operating a water utility also requires expertise from engineers, hydrologists, biologists, and specialists in water policy, economics, business administration, law, environmental sciences, and communications. The efforts of these professionals extend far beyond technical know-how—they play a crucial role in protecting public health, supporting local businesses, enabling emergency services, and ensuring sustainable growth across Arizona. Their daily work safeguards our communities, contributes to economic development, and preserves the environment for future generations. Together, this diverse team collaborates to ensure water is delivered to our homes, businesses, schools, and health facilities—24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Water professionals are essential to every community. We are grateful for their daily dedication—without them, reliable and safe water would not exist. Arizona Water Professionals Appreciation Week shines a spotlight on these vital workers, emphasizes career opportunities in the water industry, and raises awareness of Arizona’s unique water resources.
While we recognize their valuable contributions year-round, Arizona Water Professionals Appreciation Week is an opportunity to express our gratitude and honor the commitment of all who work in the water sector. Join us in celebrating their dedication.
