Behind Every Drop: Celebrating Our Water Heroes

Published Sep 16, 2025

Living in the desert, Arizonans understand the value of water. However, what many of us don’t see is the enormous effort and the dedicated people it takes to ensure that clean, reliable water flows to our homes, schools, and businesses every single day.

Behind the scenes, thousands of water professionals work tirelessly to keep our communities running. They’re the ones who ensure water is accessible, wastewater is properly managed, and hydrants are ready when firefighters need them most. Whether it's a sweltering summer, a sudden monsoon storm, or an emergency, these often-overlooked heroes safeguard our health and well-being.

Keeping Arizona’s water secure isn’t simple; it requires a skilled and diverse workforce. Operators and technicians work around the clock to treat and deliver water, maintaining thousands of miles of pipelines in harsh conditions. Engineers, hydrologists, and scientists monitor supplies and plan for the future. Policy experts, conservation specialists, and communicators help ensure we use water wisely and sustainably. Together, this team makes water service seamless, even though their work is anything but easy.

That’s why AMWUA is proud to join Phoenix Water Services in celebrating Thank a Water Hero Day, which officially takes place on September 23rd. It’s a chance for all of us to pause, recognize, and thank the people who make safe, affordable, and dependable water possible in Arizona. More than just a celebration, this day raises awareness of the hard work that happens every day, often unnoticed, to keep our communities thriving.

So, as you pour a glass of water, cook a meal, or take a shower, take a moment to remember the people behind the scenes who ensure it’s always available. Their commitment, passion, and expertise make Arizona’s way of life possible.

For over 56 years, the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association has worked to protect our member cities’ ability to provide assured, safe, and sustainable water supplies to their communities. For more information, visit www.amwua.org .
